SAMANTHA

Yesterday, after Lindy spends twenty minutes chewing me out, I finally explained to her the situation. She seemed more confused by the fact that someone would make plans for an animal that wasn't the owner than the fact that Wilbur wasn't a dog but a pig.

She insisted that I text her after ever stop and then call her once I’m done with everything. I know she's a bit overkill, and she knows it too, but that doesn’t stop her from requesting a call from me.

“How’d everything go?” she asks by way of greeting.

“Everyone is fed. Everyone is safe and asleep in their homes. And I’m officially done for the day.”

"Thank you for calling to let me know." She pauses, and for a moment, I think that the call was dropped. "I’m sorry about freaking out yesterday. I might have overreacted considering nothing terrible happened.”

I think about the close call in the park but decide it's still too soon to tell her. I was meticulous today, not wanting a repeat of yesterday. But I figure what she doesn’t know isn’t going to her hurt her.

“What are your plans for the rest of the day?” she asks.

"I met a cute guy yesterday, and he asked me to the Boulder Bloom Festival today."

“That should be fun. I’d be going with you if Devon didn’t decide to plan the trip this weekend?”

“Aren’t you having fun?”

"I learned real quick yesterday that while this mini-vacation was sold to me on the description of a couple’s trip, it’s really just a trip for him to visit the buildings of Frank Lloyd Wright."

“That’s a bummer.”

“Tell me about it. I finally had to tell him that I wasn’t feeling well and took a cab back to the hotel. I’ve booked a spa treatment package that should help me forget the last twenty-four hours.”

“Seaweed wrap?”

“Hot stone massage.”

“Nice.”

"Speaking of which," Lindy says. "I better go. I've got to be there in five minutes."

We say our goodbyes and hang up. Lindy will be back tomorrow, and she's eager to get back to work. I can understand why. These last two days have been pretty chill and satisfying, but now I’m back to where I was—jobless, homeless, and aimless.

I check my phone and remember for the fifteenth time today that Pete and I didn’t exchange phone numbers. What the heck were we thinking?

I get back to Lindy's apartment and get ready. It's hard to decide on what to wear today. On the one hand, I'd love to wear a cute sundress that shows off my curves. But on the other hand, one strong breeze outside, and I will find myself reenacting Marilyn Monroe’s iconic scene in The Seven Year Itch.

I settle on some cut off jean shorts, an off the shoulder top, and my cowboy boots. It could be a lot of walking around. I want to be comfortable.

Over the years, I’ve heard of the Boulder Bloom Festival, but I’ve never actually been. There are rides, games, food, and entertainment that draw into the city visitors from Colorado and the surrounding states.
